We had never been to Orissa Contemporary Indian Restaurant but our friends who live in Bury St Edmunds' Medieval Grid highly recommended it, so we planned a night out together.

Situated in Risbygate Street, Orissa opened in 2009 with a mission to run a restaurant which offered authentically prepared quality Indian cooking.

Walking along Risbygate Street, you will pass many restaurants but at 108 Risbygate, the warm glow of Orissa and the complex aroma of spices almost beckon you in.

The name Orissa (now formally called Odisha evokes the coastal, eastern Indian state known for its temples, seafood and ancient traditions. The choice of name indicates that this is more than just a "curry house" but a place that references India's diversity and depth.

I was impressed with the tasteful decoration of Orissa's entrance and we were warmly greeted by Naheed, our coats taken and hung up and then shown to our table. The restaurant area is small but the tables are well spaced out.

We ordered our drinks and the obligatory poppadums and started to peruse the menus which had a handy chilli scale to show how hot the dishes were.

The dishes were paired with rice styles and included:

Goan Fish/Prawn Curry - tangy tamarind and coconut served with a lemon rice.

Kerela Kozi Curry - a rich coconut based South Indian chicken curry, with onions and tomatoes, which has a gently spiced flavour.

Ananash Batakh - a fragrant duck curry, cooked with pineapple, with a delicious balance of sweetness, spice and tangy richness.

There were also side dishes that you could add to our meal, and of course there were also a tempting selection of appetisers. We decided to go straight to the main course but next time we visit I am going to make sure I have enough room for some Barbecue Lamb Ribs which are enticingly glazed in a secret barbecue sauce. How intriguing!

Wayne ordered the Kerala, and he really enjoyed the chunky cut onions and the spices which provided the right level of heat for his taste.

I ordered the Batakh and the duck was cooked to perfection, tender and tasty and perfectly paired with the tangy pineapple.

Everyone enjoyed their meal and it was a perfect venue to have a catch-up with friends.

We definitely will be visiting again and recommend it for an enjoyable night out.

They also provide a takeaway service if you fancy a spicy curry with your Strictly spicy Samba!.
